Advances in Atopic Dermatitis The 21st World Congress of Dermatology

Alan B. Fleischer, Jr., MD, Professor and Chair of Dermatology, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Introduction

The 21st World Congress of Dermatology was held September 30 – October 5, 2007, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There were many intriguing presentations on atopic dermatitis which provided new insights into this disease state. These studies provide evidence for how we should optimally treat patients with atopic dermatitis. As many dermatologists know, the incidence of atopic dermatitis is increasing worldwide. Although many suggest that this increase is reflective of the hygiene hypothesis, atopic dermatitis is a complex genetic and environmental phenomenon. By examining the results of studies from the 21st World Congress of Dermatology, clinicians can glean understanding on methods of counseling and treating atopic dermatitis which will result in improved patient outcomes. The following summarizes this author's assessment of the most important data related to atopic dermatitis presented during several symposia and poster presentations at this important meeting.

INTERACTIVE SESSION – "ATOPIC DERMATITIS I"

There were approximately 120 dermatologists in attendance with many of the world's atopic dermatitis illuminati present. Dr. Jon M. Hanifin, Professor of Dermatology, Oregon Health & Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, was one of the most critical members of the audience, always asking penetrating questions of the speakers. Highlights from the session include:

I’m delighted to visit

I’m delighted to visit this site after stretched time which was because of my blog hosting project. I have noticed here insertion of joomla hosting editorials. This is an excellent amendment which will leave good blow on user’s who are voracious for these topics. I was in quest of drupal hosting and forum hosting info for several days and lastly I got it at my preferred website.

we went to Assateague Island

we went to Assateague Island 1 year ago to watch the pony penning day and see them swim across the channel. the day before the ponies are drugged so they are checked out by a vet so they know which ones are strong enough and in good shape ccna to be adopted. they had signs everywhere that they are still wild and not to touch them but people were still going right up to them touching stroking some even got on them. { does stupidity in people still shock you it does me} plus they have a bridge you can drive over i think that is such a shame no one should be allowed over there except the people who care for them and when they bring them over.

When describing a youthful

When describing a youthful appearance, one often notes "round" or "chubby" cheeks. In contrast, 642-631older faces are termed "sunken" or "sagging". This concept of facial deflation with age is not new, but is becoming more readily embraced by the dermatologic community and the public due 642-681 in part to the vast array of available dermal fillers. Unlike the loss of bone and muscle, which at this time cannot be restored, facial fat loss can be addressed. In the past, fat transfers had been employed as the sole modality (implants aside) to add volume to the face. Although fat transfers are still used, the need for surgery 350-040 (even if very minor) can dissuade even the most eager patient. Luckily, we now have many choices of fillers to rejuvenate the aging face. The following is an overview of the discussion that occurred JN0-350 at the Hot Topic Session involving currently available dermal fillers, most of which have been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Medical therapies discussed

Medical therapies discussed by Dr. Baldwin included both topical and oral agents. The three major approved topical therapies for rosacea are cleanser pass4sure 642-145
and "leave on" formulations of sulfacetamide 10%-sulfur 5% (S/S); metronidazole 0.75% and 1% gel, lotion and cream; and azelaic acid 15% gel. Multiple randomized, vehicle-controlled and comparative studies with S/S, both blinded and open-label, have confirmed efficacy pass4sure JN0-303
and safety in patients with inflammatory rosacea measured as marked reduction in inflammatory lesions and erythema. Multiple vehicle formulations of S/S are available including cleanser, cream, gel, and topical suspension. Topical metronidazole is approved by the FDA for inflammatory rosacea based on phase III, double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled pivotal studies. Multiple blinded, split-face, and open-label vehicle-controlled studies have been completed supporting the efficacy and safety of both topical metronidazole 0.75% and 1% formulations, including gel, cream and lotion. The 1% formulations of metronidazole are approved for use once daily with the 0.75% formulations approved for twice daily application. Azelaic acid 15% gel is approved for treatment of inflammatory lesions and erythema of rosacea based on phase III pivotal pass4sure 000-076
studies, with efficacy and safety supported by multiple blinded and vehicle-controlled trials. At a session which provided an update on topical pass4sure 642-736 therapies, Dr. James Q. Del Rosso, President-Elect of the AARS, presented data from a recently completed blinded, randomized trial which demonstrated that azelaic acid 15% gel applied once daily or twice daily are therapeutically similar in efficacy in patients with inflammatory rosacea.
