The 34th Annual Meeting of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology (SPD) was held July 9 – 12, 2008, at the Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort in Snowbird, Utah. This year, there were a number of outstanding presentations, posters and forum discussions. This brief synopsis will highlight a few of these excellent presentations and provide a glimpse into the broad expanse of topics discussed.

Innovations in Photodynamic Therapy:
A CME-Certified Online Training Video

This training video provides up-to-date information on using photodynamic therapy to treat common dermatologic conditions, including actinic keratoses, acne, sebaceous hyperplasia, flat warts, and facial rejuvenation.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the pathophysiology and diagnosis criteria of actinic keratosis (AKs).
  • Describe the mechanism of action of photodynamic therapy using aminolevulinic acid (ALA-PDT).

  • Understand the incubation times necessary for the different applications of ALA-PDT.

Interactive Case Study

Perfecting the Art of Facial Rejuvenation-
Optimizing Outcomes in Patients After Weight-Loss

This CME activity addresses the use of dermal fillers and botulinum toxin to optimize outcomes in a patient following gastric bypass surgery and weight loss of 100 pounds. The patient had not previously undergone any cosmetic procedure to the face nor received neurotoxin or dermal filler injections.  The patient expressed a desire to eliminate the fine lines and deep creases in her face and restore lost volume in her cheeks and lower face as well as slightly increasing the volume to her lips.

Upon completing this CME-certified case study, participants should be able to:

  • Compare and contrast the safety and efficacy of available dermal fillers and neurotoxins
  • Discuss the use of hyaluronic acid fillers in combination with botulinum toxin type A to optimize patient outcomes during facial rejuvenation procedures
  • Describe proper injection techniques based on facial zones to optimize outcomes and minimize adverse events
